Springfield, IL…State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) joined his Republican colleagues at a press conference to underline federal policies that would benefit Illinois families. One of those policies is the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program, which establishes the Educational Choice for Children Act. Rep. Coffey said it would be a wise decision by the Governor to join other states in opting into the program because it comes at no cost to taxpayers and could benefit families across Illinois.
“Illinois helped thousands of students through the Invest in Kids Act before it sunset in 2023, and now we have a prime opportunity to strengthen educational outcomes for our children at no cost to taxpayers,” said Coffey. “The program has bipartisan support, and helps families afford tuition, tutors, specialized services for disabilities, books, transportation, and more.”
The Educational Choice for Children Act requires states to opt in and will go into effect in 2027. The program is designed to empower parents and provide crucial educational services to students in K-12 public and private schools. Donors can give up to $1,700 and receive a tax credit for 100% of that expenditure. So far, Governor Pritzker has not opted Illinois into this program.
“Saying no to this program costs Illinois families and communities, and saying no because of the party in power is wrong,” Coffey continued. “It’s not too late. The Governor should opt Illinois into the Educational Choice for Children Act today.”
Nearly 30 states are expected to opt into the Educational Choice for Children Act.
