Coffey: Illinois’ Energy Policies Are Driving Costs Up for Consumers

Since I have been in office, I have met with community leaders and stakeholders to discuss policies that affect Illinois’s energy. Shutting down coal-powered power plants and not expanding nuclear has created a shortage of energy needed to meet high demand. This summer, electric bills for the average Ameren Illinois customer will increase by approximately $45 a month according to Ameren Illinois. The Illinois legislature is doing the opposite of what needs to be done to have affordable and reliable energy in our state. The green energy policies supported by Illinois Democrats have led to higher costs for working families.

Our state can, and must do better to ensure energy prices stay affordable. Illinois families are struggling enough to keep up with the cost of living and now they have another price increase hitting their wallets. The Illinois legislature needs to take swift action to reform policies that are escalating energy prices and create a better plan that will stabilize our grid.

“Without grid stability, there is no question that our state will suffer greatly from progressive policies that do not take into consideration the affects they have on everyday Illinoisans,” Coffey continued. “Legislators must take action to ensure energy demands are met by utilizing all the resources available. It’s obvious that current policies are not working and Illinois businesses and residents will continue to see prices rise if we do not act now.”
