Coffey Files Bill That Allows Counties to Withdraw from TRUST Act Provisions
Springfield, IL…Republican lawmakers have filed legislation to amend or completely end sanctuary city policies in Illinois. The influx of migrants has cost Illinois billions, yet the State continues to provide housing, healthcare, food, and more on the taxpayer’s dime. State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) joined his Republican colleagues Rep. Paul Jacobs (118th District), and Rep. C.D. Davidsmeyer (100th District) to stand up against the Illinois TRUST Act. Rep. Coffey filed House Bill 3241 to allow Illinois counties the opportunity to opt out of complying with the provisions within the TRUST Act by adopting resolutions. Coffey believes each county should be able to pass resolutions that are in the best interests of the communities and public safety.
“The sanctuary city policies in Illinois have made communities less safe over the past few years,” said Coffey. “My bill provides counties with an opportunity to decide for themselves whether they want to comply with the TRUST Act. Many counties across Illinois feel like they are less safe because of this bad legislation and want all the resources from anyone who will help to get dangerous, undocumented immigrants out of their counties.”
The Illinois TRUST Act, enacted in 2017, made Illinois a “sanctuary state” for undocumented immigrants and prohibits local law enforcement in Illinois from participating in immigration enforcement. New federal policies have been enacted that allow federal agents to remove criminal illegals from Illinois, however, Governor Pritzker is not cooperating with federal officials to let them do their job. Coffey says Illinois can’t keep raising taxes on hard-working families to fund migrant services.
“I talk to folks from my district often who are working full-time and struggling to pay for healthcare while migrants are receiving free Cadillac healthcare, and it’s not fair to Illinois citizens. We need to act now and pass legislative reforms that put our citizens first.”
