Coffey Legislation Expands Military Recruitment Events in High Schools
Springfield, IL….State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) filed legislation that amends the School Code to expand recruitment events for military personnel. House Bill 3208 requires school boards to invite recruitment representatives from the armed forces to hold recruitment events at least once a year. Rep. Coffey says his bill will provide students with better understanding of our military and what to expect from serving in the Illinois and United States armed forces.
“I think it’s important we provide high school students with more opportunities to gain understanding of joining the military and the benefits that come from serving the Illinois armed forces,” said Coffey. “Students can learn about the benefits that veterans receive such as property tax exemptions, education and tuition assistance, as well as hunting, fishing licenses and state park camping privileges.”
Coffey continued, “Joining the military is not for everyone, but the more information provided to students can help them decide if it’s right for them. At the very least, students should know of all the options that are available to them after high school.”
The Illinois armed forces include the Illinois Air National Guard, the Illinois Army National Guard, and the Illinois Department of Military Affairs.
