National School Choice Week

As parents, we all desire the best for our children, especially when it comes to their education. National School Choice Week (NSCW), observed from January 26 to February 1, 2025, is a chance time to reflect on the educational resources available to our families.

School choice empowers families to select the K-12 educational settings that align with their children’s unique needs. This includes traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, online academies, and homeschooling. The goal is to provide an environment where each child can thrive academically and personally.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary in 2025, NSCW has grown into the largest recognition of educational opportunity in the United States. The week serves as a platform to inform and inspire parents about the diverse schooling options, ensuring they can make well-informed decisions for their children’s futures.

Throughout NSCW 2025, more than 24,000 schools nationwide are organizing community events to celebrate their staff, students, and families, while also welcoming interested parents. These activities range from school fairs and movie nights to capitol rallies and talent shows. Notably, over 60 large-scale events with statewide impact are planned, highlighting the collaborative efforts to make educational choice accessible and engaging for families.

Here in Illinois, families have access to a variety of educational choices, including traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, private schools, and homeschooling.  During NSCW 2025, several events are scheduled to celebrate and promote these options:

Chicago Trade Day: On February 1, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, The Brown House Experience is hosting a day of hands-on trade skill workshops for students, culminating in a student showcase.

ll-Star School Events: Various schools across Illinois are organizing special activities. For example, Barbara A. Sizemore Academy in Chicago will host a spirit week featuring a school bookfair and dance, while Eagle Ridge School in Silvis plans an all-school assembly with team-building activities.
