Rep. Coffey Co-Sponsors Critical Voter Integrity Bill
Springfield, IL…State Representative Mike Coffey (R-Springfield) joined a growing number of House Republicans in championing election security with his support of House Bill 5887. Filed by House Minority Leader Tony McCombie, this legislation mandates all voters in Illinois provide proof of citizenship during voter registration. Rep. Coffey is committed to ensuring the integrity of Illinois elections, preserving the foundational principles of our democracy, and protecting people from unintentional criminal activity.
“Free, fair, and secure elections is the cornerstone of a healthy democracy, and Illinois has a responsibility to protect the sanctity of our elections,” said Rep. Coffey. “With an influx of undocumented migrants pouring into our state, this legislation is essential to safeguarding our elections from unlawful voting and election fraud.”
House Bill 5887 represents a commonsense approach that should draw bipartisan support. With growing concerns about the security of our election systems, this bill offers much-needed transparency and accountability by requiring evidence of citizenship.
Rep. Coffey continued, stating, “In order to have free and honest elections, the rule of law must be upheld.”
