Coffey and Local Police Officers Hold Meeting in Springfield

I joined local law enforcement officers to have honest conversations about improving public safety in our communities. We discussed a wide range of issues including what they need changed to effectively do their jobs and strategies that improve police officer retention.

We also talked about the SAFE-T Act, pre-trial release and holding criminals accountable for their actions. Earlier this year I met with Sheriff Paula Crouch and State’s Attorney John Milhiser, and they also agree that current law has created a revolving door for repeat offenders.

These concerns led me to file HB 4275, a bill that gives judges the ability to detain offenders accused of a felony offense, rather than certain felonies. We must close the revolving door for criminals to make our communities safer.

The governor says that he’s open to making changes to the SAFE-T Act so I’m hopeful my bill will be considered for a vote in Public Safety committee.

I remain committed to working with local law enforcement officials to address the growing public safety concerns created by Illinois’ SAFE-T Act.

I understand there is no public safety without the men and women of law enforcement. We uphold these brave public servants and support new protections for those on the job while we seek new approaches to recruit a new generation of heroes to keep our streets safe.
