Illinois is set to receive nearly $768 million as part of a legal settlement with Meta over allegations that Facebook and Instagram were designed to be addictive to children. Included in the agreement are new safeguards for young users, including time limits, stronger age verification, and expanded parental controls.
The suit also alleged Meta violated the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting and using personal data from people under 13 years old.

State Representative Mike Coffey responded to the legal settlement and said this:
“Social media companies must be held accountable for allowing their platforms to negatively impact young users,” said Coffey. “We must protect our children’s mental health, and improving safeguards is a step in the right direction.”
